Washington, DC- On Saturday, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham announced that President Donald Trump has hired former Special Counsel Ken Starr to lead the administrations efforts against a Democrat led House Impeachment Inquiry. This news comes fresh off the heals of a ruling on Friday, in which Federal Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the Department of Justice (DOJ) must turn over grand jury testimony collected during Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s two year investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 Presidential Election.
Independent Counsel Starr is highly respected, and has more experience than anybody when it comes to the impeachment process.
Grisham told reporters from the White House Rose Garden.
The fact that Mr. Starr is willing to participate in the President’s defense, clearly demonstrates that the Democrats are engaging in nothing more than Presidential harassment.
Sources close to Starr have confirmed the administration had reached out late last week to test the waters and gauge Starr’s interest in leading the defense. Minutes after Judge Beryl’s ruling, Starr phoned Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and agreed to take the job.
In a statement released following the White House announcement, Starr declared that:
[We] as a nation have started down a dark path with impeachment. If this process is allowed to continue, I fear that we may set a dangerous precedent, and that future Presidents may be subject to unfair and unnecessary harassment simply because their political rivals disagree with policy.
Ken Starr was the lead investigator in the mid 1990’s when the Republican led House of Representatives attempted to impeach President Bill Clinton after he had had a sexual relationship with an intern, then lied to investigators when pressed for details. Ultimately, President Clinton was not convicted, and was allowed to finish out his second term.
