SOUL EXPERIMENT

If you’re on the edge of a volcano, you can see the steaming and the bubbles, and you suddenly realize you’re being held by the collar…

What will you do?

Scream at them to let you go?

Or smile at them weakly, and see the compassion in their eyes?

And what then?

Supposedly you smiled?

What then?

Would you crawl away with them, half-paralyzed, like a soulless insect?

Or would you let them help you stand aright?

And having done so, evermore to stand?

CHEAP LOVE AND CHEAP GRACE

Love is never cheap.

There is cheap grace, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer said.

But there is also cheap love.

Love is not a manner of fine words, or of romantic effusion, or emotional manipulation.

Love always costs something.

If it doesn’t cost you something, it isn’t love.

LOVE MUST ALWAYS COST YOU SOMETHING

Cheap Love demands all

But gives little in return

As a man I don’t always sleep well at night

But I try to do a little better every day

Love is not a destination

It is a perilous homeward journey

With no guarantees

Take no sandals

Take no sword

The heart alone will carry me
