I am glad Obama is finally standing up to the Republicans who have been kneecapping him since day one of his Presidency. It is just too bad that it isn’t over a better subject- immigration.
The truth is- the boat is full. We have enough people in this country already. We have massive unemployment with the people we have already. We don’t need anymore. We need to take care of the people we have here already- OUR people.
Those coming in illegally over the border are, with their very first step in this country, showing disrespect for us and our laws. That will not be the last law many show disrespect for.
America used to be the land people came to for a new life, for religious freedom, for freedom period. Now, mostly, they are coming here because they see the U.S. as being a big bank that they can tap into, or, in many cases leech off of.
I, having lived in many places and worked many jobs, have had mixed experiences with the different people coming to live here. Unfortunately most people come here with more respect for the American dollar than for we Americans ourselves.
On various construction sites I would be given the Mexicans workers to supervise although my Spanish was limited. I had no problem with doing this although I was not their manager and did not get paid extra for it. In the beginning I enjoyed working with them and would try to help them out, lending them gloves and food. They for the most part were hard workers and did not bitch like their American co-workers.
This all changed one day I was out with a group where there was a Mexican foreman. With the change in the power structure there was a change in their attitudes and I suddenly became the odd man out and was rudely treated and put down. In my own country. In my own home. Like I said, the only respect many coming here have is for the American dollar, not America itself.
Right now there are inordinate numbers of certain immigrant groups in our land. I have seen areas of the country with a way out of proportion number of foreigners to what the population should be. I have seen huge groups of Somalians in Minneapolis and Denver, areas outside of Columbus Ohio overpopulated with Asian Indians and, of course, southern Florida so overcrowded with South and Central Americans that it might as well be made a Hispanic country.
The problem is not with having handfuls of people from each of these countries moving here, but so many bring every brother, cousin and aunt over with them. THAT is the problem.
There is an idea in the U.S. these days that we need to allow everyone on earth a fair chance to come here and make their fortune. If their own country isn’t up to par don’t they owe a responsibility to go back there and make that better? Do they have to come here and suck us dry? Many do come here to give but too many come only to take.
I remember flying into Iceland once on my way back to the U.S. from Europe. I had intentionally taken Icelandic Air with the hope of escaping the airport for a few hours to see Reykjavik, the capital city, for a bit of my 5 hour layover.
The security guards in Monterey will not so much as let you get outside the airport building, much less take a bus into the island, that is how much they protect their land and their culture. I do not blame them for this; it is what they must do to protect what is theirs. I could only look sadly out the airport windows at the bleak but dramatic landscape, but so it was.
This is, unfortunately, the attitude we should take too. It would be wonderful if we could but open our arms and welcome everyone in, but not everyone would return that friendliness back. Instead you might get a knife in the back.
