As we head into the Christmas season, many people are celebrating in that most traditional of ways: by shopping until midnight and spending money that they don’t have on presents that people don’t want.
You may think that Uncle Joe from Cork will love that novelty nut-cracker in the shape of Baby Jesus, but the reality is, it will go straight in the bin as soon as the tinsel is down.
The other downside to this is that your house is no doubt crammed full of all these shiny presents, which makes it a burglar’s winter wonderland. This is especially true if you plan on escaping all the festive madness by going away to a place where mobile phones don’t work. An empty house is just one big bullseye to any criminals out there.
What can you do if you want to actually keep all the presents and possessions that you have worked so hard to buy?
Protect your home
There are lots of ways to protect your home. Some have been discounted on the basis of legality, but there are many fine ways to get one up on any crooks out there! The most popular one for many people still is the burglar alarm.
A burglar alarm not only provides a visual deterrent to any potential intruders but also makes a really loud noise that will simply annoy them into leaving your house if they do get in. Most have a cool flashing light on that does nothing of use but gives passing ravers something to dance to. Of course, the added bonus is that if it ever randomly goes off, you can also annoy your neighbors!
CCTV is a wise move
Alongside the conventional alarm system, CCTV is a great way to protect your home and also looks super-cool. You will feel like the head shed at NASA as you sit there in front of your screens, making sure that any passing criminals leave your property well alone. Like alarms, they will probably scare off most burglars as soon as they see them. The chance of getting their ugly fizzogs caught on camera will have them running for the hills! If not, the early warning that it gives you of someone trying to break in gives you time to call the police as well as getting the video evidence provided by the CCTV ready to pass on to them.
Get a home warranty
What’s a home warranty, you may be asking? Only one of the best ways to look after your home over the holidays! Failing to get one would be like Tony Montana “forgetting” to load up his little friend at the end of Scarface, i.e. a massive cock-up! A home warranty will provide cover against all your favorite things in your home. If they do get damaged during a break-in, it will mean that you don’t have to fork out your own hard-earned cash to get new ones. It is best to compare plans side by side to look through all the home warranty plans out there to take up.
Get a big fence
One of the simplest hacks that you can get into for a safe home this holiday period is security fencing and gates. Get the biggest that you can physically find and put massive spikes on the top so that anyone who is foolish enough to try to scale them will regret it. You could also stick some of that security paint on as well like they have at schools – it’s like tar and will make a mess of their Sergio Tacchini tracksuit! You may also want to consider getting a dog for added security on your grounds, a bit like Mr Burns from The Simpsons. Thieves hate the noise and pain that dogs can cause, so they are also a great home security option. You can learn about guard dogs here.
Home security is key over the festive period
Anyone can suffer from a home break-in during the Christmas period, especially if you live in Belfast. Studies have shown that 64 in every 1,000 homes have been burgled in recent years. Lord knows what they found to take, but I guess it shows how anywhere can be subject to this kind of crime. Taking the time to protect your home and possessions is no joke, so make sure that you do it before it’s too late! If you don’t, you could well end up spending the Christmas season behaving like a cross between Roy Keane and Victor Meldrew who’s just found out that Santa isn’t real.
