I don’t always agree with Craig Murray. I think he has somewhat one-sided views on the Israel-Palestine issue; and I don’t accept his views on immigration or on the EU (see however his recent qualifying remarks, in light of the events in Spain and Catalonia).
However, I am going to donate a small amount to his legal fund.
Why?
First of all, he is a former diplomat who is anything but an establishment doorstop. He’s not ashamed to hold unpopular views, and to express them publicly. His blog is well worth a look.
Secondly, as Murray himself says:
English libel law is recognised throughout the world as a draconian affront to democracy. Its survival is due not only to the fact that it is an invaluable tool for the wealthy to use against poor radicals, but also to the fact that libel is a very wealthy industry, feeding money to rich and influential individuals, including of course not only the libel lawyers but also the judges and court system which are all part of this massive vested interest, which is extremely well represented in the Westminster parliament.
It’s hard to argue with that. Many people probably wish they lived in the USA.
Here is more information from Murray’s blog.
Ultimately, this is a point of principle. No matter what Murray is right or wrong about on his blog, standing against UK libel laws is a good thing.
It you’re British, it could be you tomorrow.
