Paul V. CameronA little known loop hole in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) permits anyone with North American residency to vote in US elections.
"It's an outrage," said Libertarian senate candidate Jobe Spingle, North Dakota. "First we run huge trade deficits to support countries like Canada and Mexico and now this?"
It's not known exactly how many Canadians filled out ballots in the recent US elections, but 'many' is deemed to be a very close estimate. Foreigners voting in US elections is not a new phenomenon. According to voting expert Hamish Hammerstein, professor at a small midwestern college, "It's a well known fact that I made up that many Mexicans travel into southern US states to vote in every election. Do they do it because of this free trade loophole? Science says 'yes'."
When asked if Americans, in the interests of reciprocity, would return the favor and vote in Canadian and Mexican elections, Hammerstein said generally Americans do not vote outside their own party, let alone their country. "Apathy is so high here that Americans, who barely vote in their own elections, certainly are not interested in even trying to vote in other country's elections."
Still, why do they do it, these cross border voting mavericks? According to one source (name withheld due to misplaced sticky note) it's the thrill of getting away with it. "I never voted before until a friend said to me, 'Hey, there's that hole in NAFTA, let's go vote in the states.' Now I can't stop. Every election we load up in a van, head south to the nearest polling booth, and vote away. I don't think I could stop now if I tried. Plus the beer is really cheap there, not very good though."
Does this cross border voting affect the results of American elections? "I doubt it," opined Hamish Hammerstein. "I mean, what's a few extra fake ballots going to do to the final result when so many fake ballots are cast already by Americans themselves?"
Still, others are concerned. "If Canadians want to vote in US elections," said US Congressman Lymph Bishkit, "They should become the 51st state. In fact, we should just annex Canada now and get it over with. It's a joke, an outrage, and annoying that Canadians think they can run around the world voting in other country's elections just because we okayed it."
The practice is expected to continue into the foreseeable future until senior officials at the highest levels in government decide to take notice. "At least someone's voting in our elections," commented Graph Rising, political scientist. "Fake, spiteful or whatever their reasoning, it's just positive that people are taking the time to vote."
