An Open Letter to Atos Healthcare

Dear Atos,

My family and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the miracle you caused in my cousin, Laura Sutton.

After a most thorough assessment, during which you asked such questions as to whether she could touch various parts of her body and push a button, you gave her a score of zero points, and it is for this my whole family thanks you.

You see, when Laura was first born, it was very obvious that something was wrong. Doctors only had to take one look at her wide and flat nose, the large gap between her toes, and the single line across each of her palms to see that she had Down’s Syndrome, and my aunt and uncle despaired. They were right to.

Laura had the heart problems that make her condition infamous, along with all the other symptoms, but now that one of your computers has determined she no longer has an extra copy of her twenty-first chromosome, we are just waiting for the untreated hole in her heart to repair itself, her face to become like those of typical adults, and for her IQ to raise forty’ points so she can start the job you have declared her to be fit for, working a cash register in Asda.

For the miracle you have caused, may I just say once again, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Yours sincerely,

Darren Michaels

Following the implementation of the Welfare Reform Act 2012, an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom, welfare benefits paid to people with disabilities in the United Kingdom are subject to rigorous assessments to determine claimants’ level of disability and ability to work by ATOS

It’s so poorly implemented that at a meeting in June 2012 British Medical Association doctors voted that the “points system” should be ended “with immediate effect and be replaced with a rigorous and safe system that does not cause unavoidable harm to some of the weakest and vulnerable in society”.

  1. how many more deaths due to ATOS? Why is the public not marching? why are the media not repeoting on the 1700 relATED DEATHS LAST YEAR ALONE? Over 10800 DEATHS I UNDERSTAND FROM aTOS FIRST BEGAN THIS TOTALLY BABARIC ASSESSMENT.

  2. I'd been told about ti, and have been following it with interest.
Basically, if you don't attend an appointment, your payments get cancelled because you've defaulted. If you do attend an appointment, you're found to be fit for work.
Its a disgraceful way to run a system that is designed to help the most vulnerable.

  3. Another atos miracle…
We will be queing next to be cured.
    Me first…me first…..not.

  4. The government here in the UK are a complete disgrace, they are picking on the disabled and very vulnerable people. People with incurable cancer or undergoing cancer treatment are being found fit for work. Those with severe epilepsy are being told that there is nothing wrong with them and in some cases are being told that they are faking fits! A member of my family has severe mental health problems and became suicidal last year when he was told he had to attend an assessment even though we stated on the form that he can barely leave the house. I phoned the DWP to say we had a letter from his GP to say he is not well enough to attend and I told them that if he was forced to attend a medical he was very likely to try and harm himself, the reply I got was tough he has to go. Luckily though ATOS listened to the GP and he was put into the support group, but the stress never goes away because he is waiting for the next brown envelope to arrive. The stress is making his conditions worse, where as if he was left alone for a couple of years maybe, just maybe there might be a chance for him to recover.

  5. Cathy posted this, and I'm passing it on for Claire, Cassie, and anyone else who is in the UK and interested.
